The distinction is given in the framework of the contest City of the Year, organized by The Wall Street Journal and Citigroup. Medellin was granted with the award above city as New York and Tel Aviv, in between other finalists.
The cities were selected under eight evaluation points: Environment and Use of Soil, Culture and Quality of Life, Economic Environment and Investment, Progress and Potential, Power Centers, Education and Human Resources, Technology and Research, Mobility and infrastructure.
The modern transportation system, environmental policy, museums, cultural centers, libraries and public schools were some of the developments that made Medellin stood out against the other cities. The social integration that these developments made were the ultimate criteria that gave the city of Medellin this distinction.
